To find a lost person or to retrace your steps when exploring somewhere new. While it may sound insidious, location history is a necessary part of Google Maps and can be useful. Do you turn off all location data and lose some features or keep it on and lose some privacy? I can’t answer for you but I can show you how Google Maps tracks and stores your movements. Many people are happy with that in order to use web applications. ![]() Most of us know that our devices track our every move and records that data. Here is how to view and delete your Google Maps location history. Amazingly useful but also tracks you wherever you go. Every web application or feature uses and often collects, personal data and uses it for its own gain. There is a constant compromise between making the most of web technologies and surrendering your personal data. Tap your profile image at the top rightĦ.How To View (and Delete) your Google Maps Location History You can also turn off Location History tracking directly from the My Activity screen.Ģ. In this case, you’ll want to go and delete any location history Google Maps has collected so that you can complete the process and have true peace of mind. Did you know that you can delete any and all data Google has collected on you via the Google My Activity Dashboard? You can even filter out data collected per app or service. Turning off your Location History may not be enough for you though. This can be used with consent by families who want to make sure the other members are safe or to locate them during an emergency. Pro Tip: Google Maps Location History and Location Sharing are two different services! The former is used to personalize your experience across Google services while the latter is used to help you and your family or friends see each other’s location on the map for a limited or permanent amount of time. You can always navigate directly to these settings by visiting as well, but I wanted to show you the process from the Maps app since that’s where you’re likely accessing your Timeline from. As you can see, the process is largely the same despite the device you’re attempting this from. After being redirected to your Google account settings, tap “Location History” and then tap “Turn off”. To toggle it off via Maps though, just tap that profile image once more at the top right of the screen and then go to “Your data in Maps”. ![]() Another way to do it is to visit your Google Account settings and do it via the Location History section.
